আশা স্কুলের পরে নদীর পাশে হাঁটে। সে স্বচ্ছ পানি আর সবুজ গাছকে ভালোবাসে। আজ নদীটা খুশি মনে হয় না। আশার মনে একটা মৃদু ফিসফিসানি শোনায়: নদী সাহায্য চাইছে।
She walks closer and sees plastic bags and dirty water near the bank. Fish swim slowly and leaves have dirt on them. Asha feels sad but she thinks about what she can do. She decides to tell her friends.
সে কাছে গিয়ে নদীর ধারে প্লাস্টিক ব্যাগ আর ময়লা পানি দেখে। মাছগুলো ধীরে সাঁতার কাটে এবং পাতা-পাতায় ময়লা লেগে আছে। আশা দুঃখ পায়, কিন্তু কী করতে পারে তা ভাবে। সে বন্ধুদের বলার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়।
Asha calls Rafi and Mina to meet at the banyan tree. She shows them the river and explains the problem. Rafi says, "We can clean this!" Mina says, "We must ask grown-ups for safe help."

They make a simple plan. First, they will pick up trash from the bank. Next, they will ask Abbu and the school teacher to help with safe disposal. They will also put up a small sign by the path.

On Saturday they meet early with gloves and bags. Neighbours come when they see the children working. Abbu brings a big box for the trash from the municipality. Everyone works together, smiling and being careful.
শনিবার তারা সকালে গ্লাভস আর ব্যাগ নিয়ে একসাথে হয়। স্থানীয়রা শিশুদের কাজ করতে দেখে এসে যোগ দেন। আব্বু পৌরসভা থেকে আবর্জনার জন্য বড় একটি বাক্স এনে দেন। সবাই মিলে হেসে সাবধানে কাজ করে।
Mina talks to the teacher about where the dirty water comes from. The teacher helps them write a note to the local office. Asha learns that some drains pour dirty water into the river. The office agrees to check and fix the drains.
মিনা শিক্ষকের কাছে ময়লা পানির উৎস সম্পর্কে কথা বলে। শিক্ষক তাদের স্থানীয় অফিসে একটি চিঠি লিখতে সাহায্য করেন। আশা জানতে পারে যে কিছু নর্দমা থেকে নদীতে নোংরা পানি পড়ে। অফিস তা দেখে ঠিক করার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেয়।
Weeks pass and the river grows cleaner. Fish swim faster and birds come back. The children hang their small sign: "Keep our river clean." Neighbours smile when they see the clearer water.
কয়েক সপ্তাহ পর নদী আরও পরিষ্কার হয়ে ওঠে। মাছগুলো দ্রুত সাঁতার কাটে এবং পাখিরা ফিরে আসে। শিশুরা তাদের ছোট সাইনবোর্ড টাঙায়: "আমাদের নদী পরিষ্কার রাখুন।" স্থানীয়রা স্বচ্ছ পানি দেখে খুশি হয়।
One evening Asha listens to the river again. It sounds happy now. She tells her friends, "The river whispered, and we listened." They all promise to watch the river and to ask for help when they need it.
এক সন্ধ্যায় আশা আবার নদীর শব্দ শোনে। এখন নদীটা খুশি শোনায়। সে বন্ধুদের বলে, "নদী ফিসফিস করেছিল, আর আমরা শুনেছি।" তারা সবাই মিলে প্রতিজ্ঞা করে নদীর খেয়াল রাখবে এবং প্রয়োজন হলে সাহায্য চাইবে।
