Arif found a small folded paper under his mango tree. The paper had a simple map and a tiny drawing of a thirsty bird.
আরিফ তার আমগাছের নিচে এক ছোট ভাঁজ করা কাগজ পেল। কাগজে একটি সহজ মানচিত্র আর একখানি ছোট্ট তৃষ্ণার্ত পাখির আঁকা ছিল।
Arif found a small folded paper under his mango tree. The paper had a simple map and a tiny drawing of a thirsty bird. Arif called his sister Nila. They wanted to help the bird and follow the map.
আরিফ তার আমগাছের নিচে এক ছোট ভাঁজ করা কাগজ পেল। কাগজে একটি সহজ মানচিত্র আর একখানি ছোট্ট তৃষ্ণার্ত পাখির আঁকা ছিল। আরিফ তার বোন নিলাকে ডেকেছিল। তারা পাখিটিকে সাহায্য করতে ও মানচিত্র অনুসরণ করতে চাইছিল।
They opened the map. It showed three marks: the old well, the big jackfruit stump, and a small pond beyond the grove. A note said: "Follow the shade and listen for soft water." Arif and Nila smiled and set off.

They walked through the mango grove. The path was soft with fallen leaves. Birds chirped but one tiny bird was quiet on a low branch. Nila spotted it; the bird looked tired and had ruffled feathers.
তারা আমবাগান পেরিয়ে হাঁটল। পথটা ঝরা পাতায় নরম ছিল। পাখিরা কিচিরমিচির করছিল, কিন্তু এক ছোট পাখি একটি নিচু ডালে চুপ করে বসেছিল। নিলা সেটি দেখল; পাখিটা ক্লান্ত দেখাচ্ছিল এবং পালকগুলো এলোমেলো ছিল।
The map showed the old well as the first clue. They reached the well and saw fresh leaves tied to a rope. The leaves pointed toward a narrow path. Arif said, "The leaves show us the way."

Next was the jackfruit stump mark. The stump had tiny beetle tracks and a soft pile of leaves. Nila found a little hollow under the stump with cool air. They listened and heard distant water sounds.
এরপর কাঁঠালের গুঁড়ির চিহ্ন দেখা গেল। গুঁড়ির পাশে ছোট পতঙ্গের দাগ আর পাতার নরম গুচ্ছ ছিল। নিলা গুঁড়ির নিচে একটি ছোট ফাঁক খুঁজে পেল, সেখানে ঠাণ্ডা বাতাস আসছিল। তারা কানে হাত দিয়ে শুনল; দূর থেকে পানির শব্দ আসছিল।
They followed the sound and the shade of taller trees. The map line led past a low bamboo fence. Arif moved the bamboo aside and Nila stepped through carefully. The pond came into sight with bright green water lilies.
তারা ছায়া ও পানির শব্দ অনুসরণ করে এগোল। মানচিত্রের রেখা নিচু বাঁশের বেড়ার কাছে নিয়ে গেল। আরিফ বাঁশ সরিয়ে রাখল আর নিলা সাবধানে পেরিয়ে গেল। পুকুরটা দেখা গেল; সবুজ শাপলা পাতা রোদে ঝলমল করছিল।
The little bird was thirsty and fluttered to a leaf over the pond. Arif made a small bowl from a leaf and filled it with pond water. Nila found soft grass for a tiny nest under a shady tree. The bird drank and rested; its feathers smoothed slowly.
ছোট পাখিটা তৃষ্ণার্ত ছিল এবং পুকুরের ওপরের পাতায় এসে বসল। আরিফ পাতা দিয়ে ছোট একটি বাটি বানিয়ে পুকুরের পানি ভর্তি করল। নিলা একটি ছায়াযুক্ত গাছের নিচে নরম ঘাস দিয়ে ছোট একটা বাসা বানাল। পাখিটা পানি খেয়ে বিশ্রাম নিল; ধীরে ধীরে পালক মসৃণ হতে লাগল।
When the bird was strong, it chirped happily and flew to a shady branch. Arif and Nila felt proud and hugged each other. They folded the map and walked home as the sky turned soft pink. At home they told Ammi about the map and the pond.
যখন পাখিটা শক্ত হলো, সে খুশিতে কিচিরমিচির করে একটি ছায়াযুক্ত ডালে উড়ে গেল। আরিফ ও নিলা গর্ব অনুভব করে একে অপরকে আলিঙ্গন করল। তারা মানচিত্র ভাঁজ করে হাতে নিয়ে ঘরে ফিরল যখন আকাশ নরম গোলাপি রঙ নিল। ঘরে তারা আম্মাকে মানচিত্র আর পুকুরের কথা বলল।
